How to setup Netgear Router to Cable Modem

How do I setup my netgear router to the cable modem I have at home? Do I plug in the ethernet cord from the cable modem itself or Plug the ethernet cord directly from the wall to the router and then another cord to the cable modem? any help is greatly appreciated!
