How to stop websites from sending messages to my computer?

I have some software from some free movie websites installed. Every now and then I get a message promoting their wares. I wonder if there is a means to stop them. Looking at the cache I can see more come in than I see popped-up and they are all associated with Internet Explorer even though I use Firefox all the time.
