HP Pavilion dv5000 monitor failure

I have an HP Pavilion dv5000 notebook that I’ve had exactly 1 year and 3 weeks, just 3 weeks out of warranty. Today, I picked it up to use, and the monitor went dark. I can hold it to an angle and see white in the windows screen, but I can’t make anything out. I thought maybe the suspend button that activates when you close the lid might be the culprit, but the wireless and HD doesn’t turn off, just the brightness of the monitor. Is there anyone who knows how to check for problems with maybe monitor wiring? I have extensive desktop experience, but I’ve never worked on a laptop. Thanks!
