I cannot login to linux.Can anyone help?

I am having a problem with loging into Redhat 6.2, even as ‘root’. The main problem is that on the login prompt (login: ), if I type root and then press ENTER, it goes back to “login: “. It does not give me the “password: ” prompt. So, it means thatI cannot login. Can anyone help me solve this problem, please?
