I Have Compaq Window 98 How Do I Install My Windows Xp Cd

I Just Bought Windows Xp Home Edition Yesterday but my computer wont even go past the windows 98 screen so how do i boot it up without going all the way on the desktop so i can install my cd, it says files are missing right of corrupt now for my 98. How do i fix it and upgrade
