IBM 300GL won’t boot after mem upgrade

I have an IBM 300GL w/ 256M memory running Linux. I installed another 256M memory chip. When booting up, I see that the BIOS sees the memory in the upper left corner showing “RAM = 0512MB” memory and then I get black screen with the upper right screen saying “B8” and the boot goes no further. Does anyone know why the boot hangs?
