Instagram following notifications

Hello! I have a quick question about instagram.

In following tab you can see other people activities what started following actually means?

What if the profile has a private account and you request to follow, will that still show as started following lets say 40 min ago. Does the amount minutes/days etc count depending on when you did actually request or as soon as its your request is accepted.
