installing itunes

I am unable to install itunes on my computer. i am running windows xp. when i go to install the program i get a message that itunes has encountered a problem and asks do i want to contact microsoft about the problem. i have removed and reistalled both itunes and quick time to no avail. has anyone encountered this problem and if so do you have any ideas on how to correct it?
