Installing Linux on WinNT hard drive

What steps or preparation do I need to do before installing Linux OS on a hard disk that has WinNT on it? I want to start learning about Linux on an extra pc I have. I plan on downloading the freebie OS from the internet and go from there until I have the knowledge then will purchase a full version.
