Installing Windows 2000 Server

I am trying to install Win2K Server. What causes server to revert back to a default(?) IP address and subnet mask when I had earlier in the installation assigned a static IP address and subnet mask and then tells me that the default IP is in use? (Default = 10.10.1.1 & 255.255.255.0) Are there any books that do a detailed step-by-step of the installation, and state how to answer the various step up questions?
