I am hoping to get some more information and insight into future job opportunities. Here is a quick look at my background and what I am hoping for.
I am currently serving in Afghanistan with the 101st, when I return to Fort Campbell I will be rapidly transitioning to the civilian work force in 2010. Due to the state of the economy and various other factors I have several concerns and want to be prepared for the future. By the time I ETS from the military I will have had 6 years of experience in satellite communications.
I am currently going to school with DeVry to earn a Bachelor’s in Computer Information Systems with an emphasis in database administration. I have done research and it seems that a degree from DeVry could hinder me in the future. I am planning on getting certifications as well but I don’t want anything to reflect negatively on my future career plans.
Do companies look down on degrees from DeVry and other distance learning schools (such as University of Phoenix, ITT, Colorado Tech Online)? It would be very difficult with the amount of deployments we do to get a regular degree from a state college. I don’t want to waste my time and money trying to get a degree that will not benefit me in the future. Is it important to get certifications to supplement my education and military experience? Will that be enough to be competitive in the work force? Education wise, what is the best way for me to prepare for a position as a DBA?
