I’ve noticed more job listings lately (even for standard IT roles like sysadmin or support tech) mentioning “AI experience” or “machine learning exposure” as desirable skills. But in most cases, the job itself has nothing to do with AI.
Is this just buzzword fluff — or is basic AI knowledge now a legit expectation for IT professionals?
I’ve seen people list tools like ChatGPT, Copilot, and even AI-based ticketing systems on their resumes. Personally, I’ve used Google’s AI integrations in Workspace and some scripting tools, but I wouldn’t call myself an AI expert.
So my questions are:
Are hiring managers actually prioritizing AI tool familiarity now?
If you’ve used AI to speed up documentation, generate scripts, or troubleshoot config issues, has it helped in interviews?
Or is it still more of a “nice to have” that looks good on paper but doesn’t matter much in practice?
Curious to hear from anyone hiring or actively job hunting — especially in enterprise or MSP environments.
