Is it really free?

Im no Linux guru but I’ve done my share of installs since rh5.2 anyway my question is –
With all the free linux s/w out there is it really free. For examp. if i wanted to setup a box for a customer with RH and some groupware solution that was under the GPL and charge for it is it legal?
