Is Wireless Hacking-Wardriving Illegal?

I am curious as to what others think of War driving or hacking wireless networks. Here is what I mean: If I drive around with a wireless anttenna and discovery an open network and decide to explore it for educational purposes. And possibly use some bandwith for internet.
Is this illegal?
