Just in Case…

I have to reinstall XP, is it possible for me to preserve all my other programs say onto a DVD or must I reinstall all of them? Is there some software that offers this function? I have software that says it will back up my hard disc, but obviously this is not what I want.

A rather basic question I know, thanks for looking!
