Knowledge without paper

I’ve been the Network Administrator of a small SBS network(30 users, dedicated line, Exchange…….) for about two years now. Unfortunately I have no certs, had to learn everything from the ground up. Was wondering what the ratio of IT people out there have them versus those who don’t. Do employers absolutley require them?
