laptop computer network

My laptop’s screen has been shattered. The other functions seem to work. I have another laptop of the same model and would like to access the files from the broken one. I have purchased USB to USB connection cable. It is loaded on the working screen. How can I load the software for the cable to be able to access the files on the broken computer. Please Help! Is there a keystroke function to get the broken screen computer to download the software CD for the cable connection? Or is there any other way to extract the files from the broken screen computer to disk or floppy? The operating system is Windows XP on both computers.
