Laptop display problem

When I turned on my gateway laptop which is over ten years old I saw what appeared to be an ink stain at the top of the screen. I tried to rub it off and discovered it was behind the screen. I turned the computer off hoping it would disappear, but it was there when the computer rebooted. Please don’t tell me the display screen is damaged an needs repair.

Will this get worse or will it just go away.
