Laptop Network Blues

I have two pc’s linked using a D-Link 604+ modem router, and a laptop that won’t join in, all three are running XP Pro, the pc’s accept the routers DHCP without a problem but on the laptop Automatic Private Addressing takes over. Any idea’s?
