Laptop screen (desktop) open but

My laptop turned on o,k, but then it seems to have frozen with the little pointer and the sandtimer? I’ve tried Cntrl+Alt+del, I tried turning it off ( it won’t) Short of smashing it I don’t know what to do .IT’s a Compaque Presario.
