Linux and Intel P4

Im having problems with my installation on linux which is PcLinuxOS 2007, my computer is an Intel P4, 2.66 Ghz, 512 mb of RAM and has a seperate video card NVIDIA GeForce Fx 5500 256 mb, here goes my problem does linux supports video cards like the one that i mentioned above??? When i install Linux it freezes until there i no more responnse!? I think the problem is on my video card when i tried to detached it to my PC and used the built in video card on my mother board the linux works and installed,, but when i plug in (install my video card, the hardware) linux boots but then it hangs… can someone help me out… i want to use my video card on PClinuxOs. My video card is still good it works with Windows
