Linux – best OS for internet servers?

My boss recently put Linux on our office server. I’ve heard that Linux is the operating system of choice for running servers for internet applications. I’ve heard that even Microsoft uses Linux on some of it’s servers, (vs NT etc.)!!!

Is it true and why does Linux excell on servers?
Is it mostly stability or are there certain features not found in UNIX or the Microsoft OS?
