linux in VMware doesn’t recognize device

by rattala . Updated 19 years, 11 months ago

I?ve experienced a problem running Knoppix 3.7 images on Vmware player (I used vmwarez.com-Generic-LiveCD-Virtual-Machine.zip in order to boot an ISO image of Knoppix without need to have the VMWare image file): the problem is that running linux as a virtual machine, with Windows XP pro contemporarily running, many devices can?t be recognised, such as hard disk partitions, or serial PPP analog modem for which I received always a message ?modem is busy? and so on). I verified that booting Knoppix directly on bootstrap (not in a VMWare environment) modem works correctly and partiotions are correctly detected. I think Windows reserve for itself devices and resources and so linux in Vmware can?t use them because they are already used by Microsoft OS, but if this is correct I can?t understand the endless fame of VMWare virtual machines…Do someone know how I can solve my problem ? Thanks in advance
