log in using domain id after changing to workgroup

I recently changed my laptop to workgroup (from a domain). I now want to regain the desktop layout (icons, programs, etc on desktop). I have left the former company, and do not want to get back on their network, I just want to use the old desktop I was so familiar with. I have moved, so it is not possible to go back to their facility and log in to their network, and reset. when I name the domain on teh setup screen, it will not let me save it since it is not found. Is there a way to copy the desktop from that logon to a new (local) user?
