Login ID, which one is better ?

Hi All !,

I need some comments about your experience in defining standard system/application login id for all user.
Is it:
– Employee ID (4-6 digit such as 11001, which each of employee should know their employee ID ..)
– Name Combination (Erick_Lambert, Erick_La, or ELT .. ?)

or any better idea ?
