We are currently running on a hosted NT4 server with IIS and SQL 7. We pay way more than $20k a year for hosting and we are in the middle of bringing the site in-house. Talking to the local IT guru, I mentioned LINUX/APACHE/MySQL for a possible migrating structure. Later he came up with a plan to have four PC based ‘servers’ running LINUX for redundancy. Harware may contain dual Pentiums, or Durons. Load balancer at the head and dual 18 gig 10k rpm (or higher) HD mirrored in each box with dual partitions (OS/Web server), 512 meg ram, dual 10/100 nic cards and all this serving dual T1 pipes. Needless to say we are already wired with dual T1s and looking into bringing Cable for backup.
Recently we purchased Cleverpath(CA) to enable our contributors to add content to the site.
My question is: Should we move into a M$-2000 server with PSQL, IIS? or the LINUX solution?
I read somewhere on Internet weekly (now defunct)that IIS was faster and was able to server 4 times more web requests than Apache. Is this true still today?
Please reply at your leisure.
thanks.
