Looking to transfer 8MM video to PC for editting burning

I have a video camera (vintage 1997), from which I have amassed much footage of my children.

I would like to be able to import, edit and manage that video as content via my PC—likely storing it on an external hard drive to then be burned into DVDs—very much as I arrange digital music into different CDs. the current video is not digital/digitized

I dont know how to even get started in moving the images from video into the PC (the camera does not have a usb/digital port)

any help would be appreciated
