LPD Services on Linux Server Not Running

In the middle of the day, the LPD Services on our Linux server just stopped. When I type ./etc/init.d/lpd stop, It gives no message, or when I type ./etc/init.d/lpd start, I get no message. I have tried to copy a new lpd.perms file, and lpd to thesystem from a working unit, but the problem has not changed. Any Ideas?
