LPT1 and Windows 95

Installing an HP DeskJet 842C printer on a Compaq Presario 972 CDS computer. Install program from HP won’t see the printer connected to LPT1. Can’t print from Win95, but can from DOS or the DOS Window in Win95.

Have installed Win95 Service Release 1 and set the parallel port to “Standard” from ECP (recommended by MS KnowledgeBase). Still won’t use LPT1. Win95 Device Manager reports that LPT1 is functioning properly and has no device conflicts.

Have downloaded the latest install/drivers from HP’s site.

Where do I go from here?
