MacBook Pro with Dell monitor issues

Hello – my MacBook screen broken – bought a Dell P2419HC usb c to usb c but only get desktop when monitor closed on laptop. When open as pictured, not what I require. Can’t access my work. Anyone know a way round this without buying a wireless keyboard etc?! Thank you!
