May we contact you present employer?

One question I always have problem with during the interview is “May we contact your present employer” The issue is what is the best way to say no with out a red flag going off. I always wonder what goes on in the interviewers mind when they here this. Does stop me from a potential job? Truthfully my employer does not know I am looking. Please help?
