microsoft office 2003 programs have error messages

all of a sudden i get the word or excel error message that the programs are closing and i can’t access them.
i “may” have tried to download the compatibility “download” to be able to view a .docx that someone had sent me in that new 2007 office which of course is prob. not compatible anyway!
