Microsoft Word opens very slowly

When I click on a Word document, it takes about 5 minutes for Word 2007 to launch and open the document. If I first launch Word then click on File and Open, it launches and loads the file very quickly. No other file types or software exhibits this behavior. The system is a laptop running WinXP Home. I have tried a repair to Microsoft Office with no change.
