Looking at my mail servers logs I noticed that 70%+ of all emails marked as SPAM were from Hotmail mail servers. My mail users are also complaining/reporting that this is the case.
What can be done to encourage Microsoft to monitor it’s SMTP mail and prevent the Hotmail mail servers from being used to fill up users mailboxes with trash, and offensive, SPAM?
My mail servers use various services and tool-sets to monitor, and attempt to reduce, the amount of SPAM that is received. I know that it is impossible to completely clean mail of all SPAM, but I am doing my best. I know that many other mail providers are also struggling with this problem each and every day. I don’t want to impose further server overheads trying to defeat bandits who use Microsoft’s web-mail services as a launch-pad. I believe that Microsoft has a responsibility, as a global player in the IT industry, to set an example and put some money and effort into stopping this problem. I have done my best to help my customers, but adding more protection/filters just slows the service. If it can be stopped at source it would make life a lot better for me, my servers, and my customers.
I am sure that other mail service providers will agree that life is difficult enough without having one of the big players assisting the criminals in making all our lives just that little bit more tedious.
I hope that Microsoft will take this problem more seriously than it has to date. It does not appear to be doing anything at all, and it is this abrogation of responsibility that is helping to generate the SPAM that we all are forced, by lack of action, to suffer.
