Modem Compatibility

Running Linux 7.2
Kernel 2.4.7.6
System X86
Have tried Zoom and generic fax modems with no success. Generic modem install CD comes with Red Hat 7.0 drivers and no directions. Stated Kernel version is much earlier than mine. Doesn’t tell me where to unzip to? At this point I am looking for suggestions of compatible modems that will come with directions to load on to Linux 7.2.
