Modem found, but ‘waits’ to connect

I’m running Red Hat 7.1 on a laptop with an internal modem. The dialup configuration tool detects the modem and I have set up the dialling properties correctly.

When I attempt to connect using the PPP dialer, it says ‘WAITING TO CONNECT’ with theprogress bar moving from left to right, until it eventually times out.

If I click the DEBUG button in the Internet Connections dialog box (where my dialup account shows correctly), a log window comes up where it dials and then attempts to connect.

How can I get it to work?
