Monitoring apps w/ performance monitor

I was wondering if anyone could suggest a way, if it is even possible, to use performance monitor to check the status of a process.

Specifically, what I want to do is be able to check if a process (in this case a sql or oracle process) is frozen/hung or has quit with an error. I can see the process in the dialog box to set up an alert, but don’t know which, if any, of the counters would be apropriate to use.
