MS Project Flags

Can anyone tell me how to use functions in MS Project to create graphical indicator flags (red, yellow, green lights) to indicate the status of tasks (whether they are behind schedule, critically behind schedule or on time). I know how to create custom fields and graphical indicators, but I can’t figure out how to use the functions that come with MS Project in order to set up the kind of test I described above. Thanks
