MS word 2003 hit enter goes down several lines

Hi. im using MS word 2003. im facing a silly problem. when i hit enter button, the cursor goes down several lines. when i hit backspace, it comes back to the position i hit b4 “enter”

im unable to get the cursor to the immediate next line. pls help!!!!!
