Mutex created for office documents

Just wanted to be clearer about Mutex.

One of my email gateways categories the legitamate office files as Malware as the Mutexes were created as part of sandboxing, wanted to understand below,

A brief about Mutex
will the mutex be created even for legitimate files and why(reason)
