My CD burner isn’t working. Do I need a new driver??

I have a Gateway computer that is 4 years old. The cd burner has never worked. I can play cds on it but I cannot burn cds. I have been told that I need to download a new driver but I cannot find the driver I need online. Is there another driver that I can use? I am not at my computer right now, so I don’t have the details for my driver or computer series. But does anyone know of a site that has free downloads for drivers and does anyone know if I can use a different driver than the original one? I have tried to update my drivers and it says no available updates (through the gateway website)…Thanks for any help you can offer me!!
