N router hooked to ADSL modem/router combo-what problems will this cause

I am trying to increase the distance I can use my wireless laptop with the ADSL system in my homeoffice.
I am thinking of hooking up an N router to my current ADSL modem/router combo(2WIRE). I did try this with a Belkin N draft router and it was no better than the current system. Both the Belkin and the 2Wire showed up as available systems. Is this maybe splitting the N routers capacity? What do you think?
