Net connection sharing

by rnadom . Updated 21 years, 6 months ago

Setting the scene:

Two machines, one desktop, one laptop, connected wirelessly and running XP Pro/Home respectively. Desktop is the Gateway to a broadband connection, and can browse the web without problems. Laptop cannot.

The network is intact and functional in all other ways. The laptop even has an entry for “shared internet connection” in Network Connections, and will quite happily see available Windows updates, but just can’t browse the web. Every time the browser is opened, it prompts to dial up. Well, it used to, until I set it to never dial out.

This suggests to me that it can’t detect the connection over the network, which makes limited amounts of sense, since it can actually see the available net connection in Network Connections.

Anyone have any suggestions to bring to the subject?
