.net framework

An application i use is asking me to upgrade to .net framework 2.0. when i try to install it says i can’t untill i remove previous versions. i have removed prev ver in add/remove programs but it still says there are previous ver. how do i get the older versions completely removed. i am running WIN XP SP2. any help would be great, thanks
