Network Admin Power Corruption

by genell . Updated 23 years, 3 months ago

I have a question for those of you who work directly with network or system administrators. I run an ISP and have seen a pattern over the course of the past 6 years; delusions of grandeur and corruption due to the power of overseeing a network that supports thousands of users. I’m not being sarcastic hear, dead serious. We are on our 5th Network Admin (some employees, some contracted consultants whose services we used over the course of several years)that have been let go due to this silent arrogance and misuse of power. There is a sense of exagerrated self importance that grew over time with most of them. One of them, arrested for extortion and corercion when he turned off authentication intentionally in an angry rage because I wouldn’t pay him for work done (under $500 I must add!) without an invoice! We had good working relationships with all but two of them also. I’ve also noticed a consistent pattern of sleep deprivation, lots of late night Internet work, etc. with these folks.
Here’s the question: Is it just me/us or is the above scenario more common than I hear about? I have only been the manager for 2 years and 3 of these admins went sour before I started running the ship.
Thanks for any feedback or support you can offer.
GG
