Networking WinXP with Win98SE

I am having trouble getting our Win98SE system to recogize that it is on the network with our WinXP system. We have a cable modem, to which is connected a DLink router to which our systems are connected. I’ved tried installing the network several ways but it seems none of them are right. Does anybody have a foolproof set of instructions for this fool?
