New or Refurb??

Just started grad school and am on a tight budget for a new laptop. I’ve read that many manufacturers (Dell,Toshiba, etc) offer refurb units that perform just as good as a new one. Would this be the way to go, despite the risk of getting a cosmetically ugly laptop?
