New to Linux

I am really nosey and want to know what all the fuss is with this Linux stuff. I would ideally like to give it a go on my age-ing PC, but I cannot figure out how to download a free version of Linux from a website. I go to the sites only to be confronted with what I can only describe (in my own sweet ignorance) as Gobbeldy Gook. Please help me defeat W Gates world domination. I am running Windows 98 SE at the moment and am fed up with the bugs. Where can I go for a pain (hassle) free download? or idiots guide for installing Linux
