I am using Norton Anti-Virus (System 2000) on a Hewlett-Packard Pavillion PC, with Windows 98 OS. Whenever I use the Norton Anti-Virus “Live Update” — or even go to the Symantec Site and manually download the latest virus-definitions, the download is successful, but after completing about 2/3rds of the auto-installation of the downloaded virus definitions, the installation freezes and the hard drive continues grinding for many minutes. Since it is clearly “stuck”, when I finally attempt to stop the installation using CNTRL + ALT + DELETE
the computer freezes and will not shut down. I must then turn off the power and reboot, and of course go through the scandisk procedure. This happens each time.
I’ve uninstalled the Norton Anti-Virusand re-installed it to no avail. Have also run scan disk separately as well as Systems File Check. The problem remains. Can anyone suggest a solution or cause for this failed installation of the new Virus definitions?
