NT 4.0 modem installation problems

Please help. I am trying to install a modem on NT 4.0. The modem detect does not find the modem on com 1 or com2. My son was trying to help me and when he removed the old modem, he removed it using the modem icon. when he installed the new modem,the modem detect only tried to locate the modem on com1 (never looking at com2). At that point he deleted com 1 using the port icon.

After much reading on the internet, I finally set com1 to 3f8 irq 4 and com2 to 2f8 and irq 3. Now the modem detect checks both com ports and still does not detect the modem. I also installed the software for the modem and the modem’s software also does not detect the modem.
Any suggestions???
